Fiio E12 Mont Blanc headphone amplifier
My first headphone amplifier, I bought this amplifier together with Audio technica M50s/LE at the same time (4th June 2013) and at the same shop from dontblameyourears.com, I paid for $120.

To be honest, I dont really use this often as I found it is more trouble-some than gaining audio quality.

So after more than 1 month, I just keep it inside its box, I dont know when will this headphone amplifier will be useful for me, maybe for my son ? .. lol

The combination of Fiio E12 with iPhone 3GS resulting a funny music, the music quality is not natural, I am planning to buy Fiio L11 to get iPhone 3GS line out connected with Fiio E12, when I got L11 then I will come back to give this combination another brief review.

Fiio E12 Mont Blanc, the bundled package

Inside a hard paper box there are 2 pairs of rubber bands for attaching the E12 with large player or smaller player. There is also a short USB to micro USB cable for charging the battery, a short cable for 3.5mm audio jack normally for music player output to E12 input, a 6 pieces of "legs" stickers to avoid E12 from scratches and also the very nice cloth case which feel very smooth, this case has a lined clip in the middle to avoid E12 from dropping out from the case.

For $120, I think Fiio E12 is worth the built quality and the bundled accessories.

Fiio E12 Mont Blanc, the front side

In normal usage, the front side is what we need to care mostly, it has volume knob which is VERY HARD to turn with 1 hand to avoid ear damage due to accidental changing audio volume during listening, a blue LED to show on-off status when the volume knob is started then the LED will be turned on. Next of the blue LED there is another red LED which will be blinking during battery charging (when the red LED is not blinking but show solid color then it means the charging is finished), in the middle there is a headphone output and on the left there is a line input.

On the left there is a power charging using micro USB female connector and also a bass boost switch which come in handy for Balanced Armature single driver IEM like FIX XE-701.

There is a gain switch, the label stated 16db but I think the gain is less than 16db and there is also an ON-OFF crossfeed switch to join left and right channel together just in case the music source audio channels are "separated" (imbalanced).

There is nothing at the back side, just a clean flat black aluminium.

Fiio E12 with Blackberry 9860
Reply #6
Last night, having nothing to do, I opened the Fiio E12 and plug it into Blackberry 9860, during my quick 15 minutes listening to music I found the bass boost is necessary to enjoy the deeper bass, I thought Blackberry 9860 has deep enough bass but I was wrong.

During disco music playback and Sony XB30EX still plug into my ear, I turn on the 16db gain switch and boom i am shocked because it was too loud and I remembere that I can hear some pinging noise for a few seconds at the time I was afraid to damage my ear and immediately stop listening, but after a minute then I turned down the volume and start listening to music again slowly. NOTE to self : "do NOT turn on the gain 16db switch when IEM is plugged into ear".
